The 2020/21 premier league started with many mid-table teams leading the charge. Teams like Everton, Aston Villa, and Southampton gave the traditional big six a scare with their form and it looks like we will see one of them in the top 4 by season end.
It always seem like that until the toughest period of the premier league come which is December – January. All the teams are going back to their individual zones and one team that is making wonders is Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola boys have left their poor start behind. They are playing with some real swagger now and has not recorded a loss since their 2-0 defeat against Tottenham at White Hart lane back in November 21 2020. Manchester City have amassed a massive 51 points out of a possible 57 in that timeframe.
Guardiola’s team is currently leading Manchester united league with 3 points and a game in hand.
Manchester city real testing period will be February where they will face Liverpool, Tottenham, and Arsenal. Survive this and the league is theirs. The beauty about this team is the diversity of goal scorers. This make it harder for anyteam to stop. The goals can come from anywhere. Foden, Gundogan, and Sterling are the highest goal scorers with 9 goals each.
The title is for Manchester City which will be his third in 5 years.
Other Contenders
A look at other title contenders shows inconsistency and lack of quality team depth. Manchester united are second and might go down soon with their impotency in front of goal.
The stalemate against Arsenal means they have failed to score from open play against Arsenal (twice), Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham this season. This is a concern for Solskjaer and knows he needs his attack line to work on. Bruno Fernandes has been a revelation ever since joining Manchester united but his performance against the traditional big six is abysmal. You need to beat the best in order to be the best.
They have a good team depth but aren’t enough quality compared to Manchester City.
Liverpool is another contender that is struggling this season. There away record of 3 wins, 5 draw, and 2 losses is not good. They have also conceded 14 goals on the road which is 3 short of what they conceded in 19 away matches last season. Jurgen Klopp backline injury curse and the declined form of Trent-Arnold has exposed them to shocking losses. This is a problem with teams that don’t have a solid second team. The over reliance on the original backline of Robertson Matip Van Dijk and Arnold has cost them this season. They are currently 7 points off the top and fighting for a UCL spot.
Leicester are set to fight it out for a champions league spot in the 2020/21 season. They crumbled towards the end of last season and will hope for a better ending this time around. A title challenge is definitely not in their thought. Their best bet would be to achieve a champions league spot.
Chelsea, Tottenham, and Arsenal haven’t shown any seriousness and won’t dare dream of the title race.
It’s all Manchester City now. It’s definitely going to be jubilation for the citizens by season end.
