Dr Temitope Ilori, Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), has revealed that Osun State’s HIV prevalence rate has declined to 0.9%, placing it below the national average.
This achievement highlights progress in the state’s fight against HIV/AIDS. Following directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, NACA has been tasked with strengthening partnerships with individuals living with HIV/AIDS and collaborating closely with the Osun State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA).
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating HIV/AIDS. He praised NACA’s initiatives and their contributions to improving healthcare services across the state. Acknowledging the ongoing challenges, the governor encouraged continued efforts to address the epidemic effectively.
Despite progress, NACA has identified the rise of new infections as a pressing issue and is intensifying public awareness campaigns about HIV/AIDS. The agency disclosed alarming statistics for 2023, with approximately 26,000 new HIV infections reported among children in Osun State.
In addition, 15,000 AIDS-related deaths occurred in children under the age of 15 during the same period. These figures underscore the significant public health challenge posed by HIV/AIDS in the region, particularly among vulnerable populations.
How NACA Plans To Make Osun HIV-Free
Preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV remains a core priority for NACA. The agency aims to ensure that newborns are not exposed to the virus through improved testing, treatment, and prevention strategies.
To achieve this, NACA emphasises the importance of individuals knowing their HIV status. By getting tested, those diagnosed with HIV can access further evaluations and enrol in treatment programs. NACA provides free medications to individuals living with HIV/AIDS through its affiliated medical facilities, ensuring that treatment is accessible to all who need it.
This initiative plays a critical role in managing the disease and reducing its impact on affected communities. Through sustained efforts, NACA seeks to improve health outcomes, reduce HIV-related deaths, and curb the spread of the virus across Osun State.
