The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced that it has successfully registered over 10 million children across Nigeria and provided each with a birth certificate. This milestone achievement was disclosed in a statement released on January 2, 2025, signed by Talibat Oloruntoba, the NPC’s Director of Public Affairs.
The commission emphasised that this accomplishment reflects its unwavering commitment to creating an accurate and comprehensive population database. In addition to registering births, the NPC calls on Nigerians to ensure that deaths are also registered with the commission.
This step is essential for maintaining a reliable and up-to-date population record, which is crucial for national planning and development. The commission also took the opportunity to express its gratitude to Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, for her role in presenting the birth certificate to the country’s first baby of the year, further highlighting the importance of proper birth documentation.
How NPC Makes The Process Easier
The NPC has outlined plans to establish more than 4,000 additional registration centres across the country to improve access to registration services. This expansion aims to make it easier for parents and guardians to register their children, regardless of their location.
The commission is harnessing modern technology to ensure that every registered child receives a unique and secure identity that cannot be replaced or duplicated. The NPC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every child born in Nigeria is promptly registered and provided with a birth certificate.
Through the digitisation of its registration system and strategic collaboration with the Primary Health Care Agency, the commission is ensuring that children will be registered even in remote or underserved areas of the country.
The NPC is urging all parents and guardians to take full advantage of its free registration services. By doing so, they can secure a legal identity for their children and contribute to the development of an accurate and dependable national population database. This initiative underscores the NPC’s dedication to supporting the rights and well-being of every Nigerian child.
About NPC
The National Population Commission (NPC) is Nigeria’s foremost agency responsible for collecting, analysing, and disseminating vital information about them
Originally established in 1979, the NPC was dissolved in 1983 following a military coup. However, it was re-established in 1989 as an independent and autonomous body, tasked with performing its critical functions without interference. Headquartered in the capital city of Abuja, the NPC operates under the supervision of the Nigerian Presidency. Currently, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra serves as the head of the commission.
One of the primary responsibilities of the NPC is the periodic conduction of censuses, which involves the enumeration and assessment of the population of Nigeria. This data is essential for national planning, resource allocation, and policy formulation.
In addition to this, the NPC plays a key role in the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive system for registering births and deaths across the country. This vital service contributes to demographic accuracy, enabling the government and various organisations to track population trends and public health developments.
The NPC is also committed to educating the public about its functions and the importance of accurate demographic data in shaping the country’s future. Their vision is to become Nigeria’s most responsive public institution, striving to be the leading population centre of excellence. In line with this vision, the Commission aims to continually improve its processes, ensure the reliability of its data, and contribute to the sustainable development of the nation.
The NPC’s mission is centered around being the foremost demographic agency in Africa, working towards enhancing the quality of the population data it collects, and using that information to promote national transformation and development across all sectors.
