Professor Darlington Obaseki, the Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), announced that the hospital had provided medical care to nearly 300,000 patients in 2024. He shared this information during the hospital’s 2024 End of Year and Award Night, which took place in Benin City, Edo State.
One of the most notable aspects of the event was the recognition of various departments and individuals who had demonstrated exceptional dedication and excellence in maintaining the hospital’s high standards.
The event served as an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past year, celebrate remarkable milestones, and honour the tireless contributions of the hospital staff who made these successes possible.
On average, UBTH caters to over 1,500 outpatients every day. Among these, only two or three cases may lead to complaints. However, the hospital staff often do not dwell on the small number of issues and instead, focus on the impressive fact that around 1,497 or 1,498 patients are treated successfully and discharged daily.
In 2024, UBTH staff accomplished a great deal. They treated and discharged approximately 20,000 inpatients from the hospital wards, managed over 2,100 births (with more still ongoing), and performed nearly 6,300 surgeries in the hospital’s various operating theatres. These figures are a testament to the extensive workload and dedication of the hospital’s workforce.
The hospital attended to close to 300,000 patients throughout the year, which underscores the significant efforts required to maintain such a high standard of care.
The 2024 End of Year and Award Night was organised as a way to acknowledge and celebrate the individuals and teams who contribute to this challenging but rewarding work.
During the event, it was also highlighted that there are still some staff and departments who have not yet been formally recognised for their efforts. This includes awards for the overall staff of the year, department of the year, unit of the year, and committee of the year, among other categories.
Acknowledging these unrecognised contributions demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to ensuring that every effort is appreciated and rewarded appropriately.
