CLWCF Urgently Requests Assistance For Nigerian Children Facing Cancer

Every year, a significant number of children lose their lives to childhood cancer, with approximately 400,000 children and adolescents diagnosed annually, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

In light of this, the Children Living With Cancer Foundation (CLWCF) continues its efforts to support young patients battling cancer. During the 2024 Christmas party held at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba, Lagos, the foundation’s founder called on the government and kindhearted Nigerians to provide assistance to these children.

The event marked the 20th anniversary of CLWCF’s annual Christmas celebrations, a milestone in the foundation’s mission to bring hope and joy to children with cancer. It featured an array of activities and performances aimed at uplifting the spirits of the young patients, fostering an atmosphere of happiness and encouragement during the festive season.

The CLWCF is urging Nigerians to support its efforts in any way possible. This could include financial donations, volunteering time, or offering in-kind assistance. The foundation emphasises the importance of community involvement, especially given the current economic challenges in Nigeria. Many parents of children battling cancer face immense financial strain, with hospital bills becoming an overwhelming burden.

At the Christmas event, parents were encouraged not to despair despite the difficulties of parenting in Nigeria’s tough economic climate. They were advised to consistently show love and reassurance to their children and to avoid shedding tears in front of them. This was highlighted as crucial for maintaining open communication between the children and their doctors, which is essential for effective treatment.

The children were also encouraged to focus on the positives around them rather than dwelling on their circumstances. They were reminded that there is hope for their recovery and that finding joy in their environment can have a meaningful impact on their overall well-being.

How The Foundation Supports The Children

The foundation’s support for the children extends beyond emotional encouragement. CLWCF opens a dedicated bank account for each child, where donations are deposited and used exclusively for their treatment and healthcare needs.

This ensures transparency and that the funds directly benefit the intended recipient. In addition to financial assistance, the foundation also provides skill development opportunities for the children, equipping them with valuable knowledge and abilities that they can use in the future.

CLWCF also makes an effort to celebrate the lives of the children under its care. On the last Saturday of each month, the foundation organises birthday parties for them, complete with cakes made without additives or sugar to prioritise their health. These celebrations offer a sense of normalcy and joy, helping the children feel special and cared for.

Through its various initiatives, CLWCF continues to provide critical support and hope to children with cancer and their families. The foundation’s ongoing appeal to the government and the public reflects its commitment to ensuring that no child battling cancer is left without care, compassion, and resources for their journey toward recovery.
