A Step Closer to the Game of Basketball: Positions and Goals

Since it originated in 1891 in Massachusetts, the United States of America, by Dr James Naismith, Basketball has proven to be a very beneficial sport worldwide. Anyone who chooses a career path in the game is in no doubt on the right path. The game’s main goal is to score more points than any opposing team. The more the ball goes in through the basket the more the points are accumulated.

In the game of Basketball, there are different ways to earn points. Points are earned according to the manner or skills used in scoring the goal. These scoring techniques include:

Field Goal: This technique is simply when a player succeeds in throwing the ball into an opponent’s basket. This attracts 2 points.
Three-Pointer: This attracts 3 points after scoring from behind the 3-point line. The 3-point line on the court marks the area from which a shot is worthy to be appointed 3 points. Another to note is that the distance to which the 3 points are awarded differs according to the level of play.

For the National Basketball Association (NBA), it is 7.24 meters from the top basket and 6.71 meters from the corners. The Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA), has it as 6.75 meters from the basket, same goes for the NCAA, while at the High School Basketball level, it is 6.02 meters from the basket.

Slam Dunk: Slam dunk involves a skill or technique where a player lifts very high and uses enough strength to get the ball into the basket. This technique is awarded 2 points.

LayUp: This technique is awarded just a point. It is when a player drives the ball to the basket and as the name implies β€œLays” it in.
The Free Throw: A score is known as Free Throw if it is scored directly into the net from a foul spot.
